Recently relocated to Nanaimo from Toronto, veteran bassist Coleman has formed a dynamic
quartet featuring Ryan Oliver on sax, Brent Jarvis on keyboards and Adam Robertson on
While in Toronto, Coleman had the opportunity to perform frequently as both a sideman and a
bandleader. As a co-leader of The Cookers Quintet, Alex recorded three CDs and toured
across Canada four times with the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
Other groups he organized often included some of Canada’s, and North America’s best jazz
musicians. Wanting to learn from and show respect for the tradition of the music he loves, his
groups always included the likes of our country’s finest including: drummer Terry Clarke,
pianists Bernie Senensky, Brian Dickinson, Gary Williamson, and Dave Restivo, and
saxophonists Ryan Oliver, Kelly Jefferson, Mike Murley, and Perry White.
While living in Toronto Alex spent eight years leading an octet named “Tonight at Noon” which
performed the music of legendary bassist and composer Charles Mingus. This group performed
at the Toronto International Jazz Festival, and countless times at Toronto’s finest club, The Rex
Hotel Jazz & Blues club.
A proponent of the 50’s/60’s Blue Note hard bop era, Alex delved into that music and came out
with a deep appreciation of the composers and swinging rhythm sections that helped define the
music of the time.
